"I can use an EVGA 8800GS video card in my Dell 530?
I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with a 300W power supply. I have an EVGA Geforce 8800GS video card, but says it needs a 400W power supply to work. But I've also heard that Dell power supplies are high quality and can take more energy than in the list. I also read that the EVGA 8800GS just consuming more power than a 8600GT, which used to have and it worked fine. Therefore, some information is telling me "do not", and some, it suggests that all is well. Of course I have a Core 2 E6550 processor, hard drive, a DVD drive and a USB wireless network adapter. I have a USB TV tuner, but obviously can only unplug it if it makes a difference. Also one other question – Is it harmful to run the power supply near its maximum? Basically, assume that the 8800GS is … Would it still be a bad idea because it is focusing on the power supply or anything like that?
I personally would like to upgrade my PS to a 600-650W. Post you are opening your case anyways receive a brand new PS and video card to bad some clean power. You can use your old one as is and see if you the problem, but is expected to reduce life expectancy of the current PS and can only go up in a cloud of smoke. It is not worth what I think.
